About Frequency 55 Multifocal Lenses
Frequency 55 Multifocal from CooperVision
![]() |
Frequency 55 multifocal lenses are one family member of Coopervision's "total multifocal solution." The company becomes the first to offer presbyopic correction with multiple product lines such as Ultravue 2000 Multifocal, for high level presbyopes, and Proclear Compatible Multifocal, for dry eye sufferers.
Frequency 55
lenses use Balanced Progressive Technology (BPT). This technology combines spherical and aspherical optics and unique zone sizes to produce two
complementary inverse lenses system -- one center distance lens for dominant eye
and another center near lens for non-dominant eye.
How Do Frequency 55 Multifocal Contact Lenses Work?
The Frequency 55 Multifocal D lens has a spherical central for the correction of distance vision and an aspheric concentric zone for the correction of intermediate and near vision. The Frequency 55 Multifocal N lens has a spherical central zone for the correction of near vision and an aspherical concentric zone for the correction of intermediate and distance vision.
Although frequency multifocal lenses initially are worn based on dominant and non-dominant eye, many options exist to maximize visual acuity.
If you're an editor you may wear the center near lens in your dominant eye, or even center near lenses binocularly.
If you're a golfer you may be better off with center distance lenses in both of your eyes.
So, make sure that your doctor's prescription specifies which your dominant eye is.
"Are Frequency 55 Multifocal Contact Lenses for me?"
Frequency 55 multifocal are right for you if you're at an early stage of presbyopia and want to accept a compromise vision. These designs enable eye doctors to fine-tune distance, near and in between vision clarity to an optimum level.
If you've been in monovision contacts, or were difficult to adapt to other bifocal contacts designs, frequency multifocal offers better binocularity and stereopsis vision. Since each lens provides full progression of power you may adjust with the center distance lens worn in the eye that was previously used for distance vision with monovision.
Frequency 55 Multifocal is also an excellent choice if you've been in monovision and experience an increasing add power. You're used to having a better distance vision in your dominant eye and near vision in your non-dominant. Transitioning from monovision to frequency multifocal is natural.
But Frequency 55 Multifocal lenses aren't for you if you can't accept all distance compromise. They aren't right for you if you can’t adjust to "Balanced Progressive" vision correction. One wearer stated that the lenses created halo effects and her focus kept going in and out.
